Peaceful Mind with Zen and Tea 2025

Immersive 3-Day Retreat in Nature's Stillness

− A quiet journey inward, in the tranquil rhythm of Lake Biwa and the passing season −

November 11- November 13, 2025

This three-day intensive retreat limited to 10 participants offers a rare opportunity

to step away from the rhythms of daily life and enter a space of quiet, concentrated presence.

The placid surface of Lake Biwa mirrors the calm within− a gentle reminder that we, too,

are part of nature’s unfolding.

Set beside one of the world’s oldest lakes—formed over millions of years—

the northern shore of Lake Biwa, known as Kohoku, is a region where centuries of human life and culture continue to breathe gently through the landscape. Just 1 hour and 10 minutes from Kyoto as its shortest, this is a place where nature and people have long lived in quiet dialogue,

where mountains, water, and sky have been revered as expressions of the sacred.

Over the course of three days, we gently begin to shed the layers of the “self”—a process that lies at the heart of Buddhist practice. Immersed in this exceptional natural setting,

we open ourselves to the lived experience of Zen, not as concept but as presence.

Alongside Zen’s timeless teachings, we touch something deeply rooted in the Japanese spirit—a way of being that honors impermanence, harmony, and quiet reverence for the natural world.

All meals are thoughtfully prepared and shared, using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients.

This nourishment becomes part of the retreat’s quiet rhythm—supporting both body and spirit, and honoring the nature and culture of this place.

This is more than a pause—it is a return.
A moment to dwell in stillness, to listen deeply, and to be held by the beauty that surrounds.

About Lake Biwa

Lake Biwa is one of the oldest lakes in the world, with origins dating back approximately 4.4 million years. Over these countless millennia, it has borne silent witness to the shifting of earth,

the passing of seasons, and the evolving of human life.

More than 90 submerged archaeological sites lie beneath its waters, preserving traces of

daily life from as far back as the Jomon period (13,000 BCE−)to the early modern era.

These remnants offer a quiet glimpse into the deep cultural memory of the land—where people have lived, worshipped, fished, cultivated, and coexisted with the rhythms of nature for thousands of years.

Post-Retreat Excursion (Optional)

After the retreat concludes on the morning of Day 3, those who wish may join Seizan for a guided afternoon excursion to explore the hidden beauty of the Takashima and Nagahama areas. These lesser-known regions are among Japan’s true gems—rich in history, nature, and quiet spirituality,

yet rarely visited by the general travelers.

Please Note:
Transportation will be arranged based on the number of participants. The cost of a charter vehicle will range from $100 to $150 USD per person, depending on the group size.

Lunch, entrance fees, and other incidental costs are not included in the retreat fee.
